This was my first time using RPG Maker 2000 VALUE!
I had a rough idea I wanted to roll with, and make a sort of short game out of: it involved a small group of students, who just can't really stand one another.
I worked on and off of this project for around 6 months. There's a lot I still don't know about these earlier engines of RPG Maker, and I think I really challenged myself to work with something so liminal...even if the end product was pretty short.
As stated in the bonus room of the game; I don't know if I'd want to use the same engine again anytime soon, haha;; it was a nice challenge, but I'm really more used to the (seemingly) limitless options of RMMV/MZ!
For the game itself, I really wanted to write a short story, in game format. Not really visual-novel-like, but definitely more dialogue heavy than gameplay.
The game concept I had also started in it's infancy when I was using RPG Maker FES for the 3DS quite a number of years ago. I wanted to make a kind of "mean-girls" like story, and it initially centered around April, the tertiary character of the final game.
During development, I decided I wanted the "heroine" character to be way more sour and unplesant. I wanted to switch up the narrative of the player character; not the default "well meaning, sweet and innocent" type trope for "horror" games. I instead went with a really selfish, self-centered type character, now known as Katrina in game as the main player character.
The girls' dynamics are in some sort of endless hate-triangle. Katrina, hoity-toity and a selfish snob > Steph, a jealous and manipulative brat > and April- timid at first, but game-players will be able to see how she's not much better than the rest of the cast, as she willingly went along with some of the unsavory actions of the others.
All three girls are flawed in their own ways, and I think I expressed the whole "snobby teenagers" trope pretty well.
...maybe.
I did have a lot of fun while working on it, though! I liked making really snarky comments between the characters, and I liked making them flawed. It felt more "natural" to work with, I think!
This game is free to download on my itch.io page! Please feel free to check it out! (:
((Do note: as with many RPG Maker 2000/2003 engine games, sometimes the character will be "stuck" either walking in a single direction, or unable to be moved at all. This is a known bug, and the only way I've managed to remedy this is by button mashing the keyboard, or closing and opening the system while button mashing;; I apologize for the inconvenience.))
